I wish I had the time, energy, and intelligence to start a real MLIA site the way it used to be. I wouldn't let it get taken over by liars and the such.

You are seriously right. But there was this one person who lied and got everyone interested into only "FUNNY" and not "AVERAGE". The site should be renamed "MY LIFE IS A LIE".

I agree-- MLIA was funny when it was actually average.

The new stories can be funny too (although many of them aren't), but they're not like the old ones. The old stories weren't as obviously funny as the new ones, so I think a lot of people miss out on what makes them funny.
Oh well-- that's their loss.

Owen Kuemerle:

So when you use a boom mic, its purpose is to pick up on the actors talking and the sounds of their physical actions. This will ultimately lead to reduction in ambient/background noise because shotgun mics are highly directional. Mounting the mic on the camera will give you a wider area where sound can be picked up and as a result, it will also give you ambient/background noise. The downside to this is the talking quality will be lower and the physical sounds that the actors make will be less pronounced unless you have the camera fairly close to the shot. You will want to record a minute or so of background/ambient noise to mix in with shots that used a boom mic because otherwise it will sound awkward with that lack of background noise.
Another thing to consider is that it will require a dedicated sound person and you have to make sure that mic doesn’t get in your shots.

Thanks for the insight. I'm going to definitely try one out for my next movie, which should be coming out in April so I'll tell you how it goes.

Another thing to consider is that it will require a dedicated sound person and you have to make sure that mic doesn't get in your shots.

Owen, I'm impressed that you've made another blog post. I wish that you'd update the site more often because you actually write some pretty good stuff and I enjoy reading your posts.

Since I've been looking into boom mikes for my films, in your opinion, how much of an advantage does a boom mike offer in comparison to a standard mounted shotgun mike?

The reason for why I ask is because I can see a boom mike making my shooting sessions a whole lot more complicated, but if the audio quality advantages are worthwhile, I wouldn't mind using them.
